Zoning Change Request

Please note: This process can take more than 3 months to complete from the time the application is submitted with all appropriate paperwork until it is approved by Cortland City Council.


Procedure for a zone change:

  1. Submit a Zone Change Application, a current Trumbull County Tax Map, survey description of area to be changed if not entire parcel, and a list of adjoining property owners across and contiguous to the property in question.
  2. A filing fee of $200 must be paid at the time the application is submitted.
  3. The Planning & Zoning Commission secretary will set date for a public hearing to be placed on the agenda, at least a thirty (30) day notice.  The Commission meets the 2nd Monday each month at 7:00 p.m. The principal or legal counsel needs to be present at the meeting to review the plans.
  4. The Planning & Zoning Commission secretary will send copies to Planning & Zoning Commission members, property owner, and abutting and contiguous property owners of the property in question.
  5. Once the zone change is approved by the Planning & Zoning Commission, a recommendation is sent to Cortland City Council.
  6. The Clerk of Council will set a date for a public hearing to be placed on the City Council agenda, at least twenty (20) day notice.  Council meets every 1st and 3rd Monday each month at 7:00 p.m.  The principal or legal counsel needs to be present at the meeting.
  7. The Clerk of Council will send copies to Cortland City Council, property owner, and abutting and contiguous property owners of the property in question.
  8. Once the zone change is approved by City Council, the request is recorded and final.
