PARKS & RECREATION BOARD                     May 11, 2009

The Parks & Recreation Board met on Monday, May 11, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. at the City Administration Building, 400 N. High St., Cortland, Ohio.  In attendance were the following board members:  Dave Christner, James Gibson, Mike Norton and John Picuri. Absent was Lisa Voytek. Also present were Mayor Curt Moll, Service Director Don Wittman, and Gerri Moll & Phyllis       .

Mike Norton made a motion to approve meeting minutes from February’s meeting, seconded by Jim Gibson All Ayes.  MOTION APPROVED

Willow Park

  • Skate park – going well.  Thank you to the Service Department personnel for getting the old equipment out and the new equipment installed.  Also for putting up the new playground equipment.  Some of the older equipment (teeter horses, fire truck) will not be put out this year.  Will be kept in storage.  Display sign has been ordered and delivered.  No hurry to put up until August, so it doesn’t get destroyed.
  • Gerri Moll was here to discuss the poison ivy issue along paths in the woods as well as keeping it as natural as possible with native plants.  Look at designating area and giving it a name “Willow Nature Preserve” or something to that affect.  Partner with Beautification Committee.  Paths are deteriorating, in the future look at possibly paving the paths but in the short term this year enhance paths with additional grindings, put grindings on again next year and then spray with sealer to harden.  We need to remove brush along paths that appear to have been dropped off by someone.  Need to also look into removing trees that may have fallen across pathway.

Pickle ball Court

  • High School tennis team uses all three courts during matches.  High School rules state that if there are any alternate markings on the court it can not be used.  There was a suggestion to possibly put tape down this summer to mark pickle ball court and remove in the fall before the next high school season.  Park Board members would like to have a little more information as far as how many people are really interested in this type of court and if we were to place it on the old roller hockey rink what is cost of installing and purchasing net
  • Jim Gibson moved to not paint lines on the tennis courts and to advise Jerry Carleton as to why we would not be adding the lines per the High School regulations, seconded by Dave Christner. All Ayes. MOTION APPROVED

Community Garden

  • Mike Norton stated he has not made contact with anybody in Trumbull County yet and he will look into it further and collect all the information he needs to present next year to the Board.  Geri Moll stated that the Master Gardner’s are working with Warren City on their Community Garden so he could contact someone down at the Tr. Co. Ag. Center.

John Picuri made motion to adjourn to Willow Park for walk-thru, seconded by Dave Christner.  All Ayes.  MOTION APPROVED
